The Play
Roger Hall, one of New Zealand’s most beloved playwrights, brings his trademark wit and warmth to Social Climbers. A group of female teachers, joined by a reluctant daughter, set off for a weekend of bushwalking in the mountains. When torrential rain and a washed-out bridge trap them in a hut for three days, the stage is set for laughter, tension, and unexpected revelations.
Hall’s comedy gently peels back the facades we construct, exposing truths about friendship, aging, and everyday struggles. The play celebrates female bonds while offering audiences the chance to laugh at themselves through Hall’s self-deprecating humour. Infused with local flavour—Kiwi slang, cultural references, and familiar situations—Social Climbers is both genuine and appealing.
This insightful comedy is a love letter to female friendship and a reminder of why Roger Hall is truly a national treasure.
